Frequently asked questions

Are your bags totally compostable?

Yes, our bags are 100% compostable, both at home and in industrial composting facilities. They're made from plant-based materials and break down naturally in as little as 180 days.

What advice would you give to someone who's new to using compostable poo bags?

We recommend storing your bags in a cool, dry place to maintain their integrity. Also, be sure to check with your local council regarding the proper disposal methods for compostable waste. If your bags get wet on a walk, use them within 45 days.

Can I compost your bags at home?

DIRTBAGs are certified for home  and industrial composting, they will degrade in the right conditions within 180 days. Please note: they’re not suitable for compost used to grow food.

How strong are your bags?

Our bags have been designed to be robust and leakproof. We appreciate the importance of keeping nasties where they belong and our bags are designed to do just that. They are tested extensively and made thick and strong.

What materials are used in DIRTBAG packaging and printing?

Our bags come packaged in FSC-certified cardboard boxes and tubes (for rolled bags), all sustainably sourced. Plus, all printing uses water-based, eco-friendly inks to keep our environmental impact low from bag to box.

What makes your bags different from other 'eco-friendly' options on the market?

DIRTBAG stands out for its genuine commitment to sustainabilityOur compostable poo bags are strong, leakproof, and 100% plastic-free, but we go further. With every UK sale, we donate to the Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) to support their sea turtle conservation efforts. So every bag helps clean up after your pet and protects wildlife.

Are there any common misconceptions about using compostable poo bags that you'd like to address?

One misconception is that compostable bags can be left anywhere and will simply disappear. While our bags are compostable, they still require the right conditions to break down properly. Always dispose of them responsibly, preferably in a designated compost bin or through your local council's composting program.

What happens to DIRTBAG poo bags if they end up in landfill or are incinerated?

While most landfills incinerate waste, DIRTBAG bags produce up to 80% less ash compared to conventional plastic bags when incinerated. If they do remain in landfill, DIRTBAG bags will eventually break down completely without leaving harmful microplastics behind - unlike traditional plastic bags and those made from recycled plastics, which can take decades to degrade and still leave microplastic residues even after breaking down.
